Andrew Cross (artist and muso) realised his 2 year dream by opening his latest exhibition at the IKON Gallery in Birmingham on Thursday, July 1st 2010. Andrew’s vision was to produce a 30 minute artistic piece showing the relationship between artist, instrument and space. What he achieved was nothing less than inspirational!
“What Andrew was looking for was an original performance by the musician and an organic sound from the instrument. He didn’t want to give the viewer any indication that the musician was being recorded so we weren’t able to close-mic any of the drums so we had to be quite creative in our mic usage and placement” Sean Kelsey.
Carl Palmer (world renowned drummer with 70’s prog rock pioneers, Emerson, Lake and Palmer) performed 5 unique, never seen before, drum solo’s utilising every aspect of the drum kit. Recorded at Solent University in September 2009, Chilli Inc. Studio’s resident engineer, Sean Kelsey, and freelance musician/drummer/engineer, Joseph Clancy, were lucky enough to be awarded the job of recording the audio and mixing it to the video Andrew took. This has now been put together for the exhibition that started July 1st 2010.

Developing the partnership with FIlm Audio (Estonian-based recording and post production facilities), Chilli Inc. Studios were commissioned to record VO for an animated short film with English-based actors. Over a period of 2 days, we worked with producer Aina Jarvine (of A Film Estonia) and three actors to record all of the dialogue for the 6 minute short. Delivery of the recorded audio couldn’t have been easier! We simply FTP’d all of the Pro Tools session files over to Film Audio’s main studio in Talin, Estonia, where their resident engineers received it for post production.

Chilli Inc Studios has teamed up with an international audio post production and sound design house based in Estonia! Simon Charles, owner and chief engineer, has years experience in live theatre (from his years at the Royal Opera House) as well as audio post production (working out of www.filmaudio.ee based in Estonia).
“In making this partnership, we should be able to interact and break into different sectors and hopefully create a symbiotic relationship that will allow each of our businesses to develop independently and simultaneously” - Sean Kelsey, Chilli Inc. Studios.

There's a lot of excitement surrounding the work in the pipeline for the studios on Great Percy Street. Architects have been appointed and the new designs for the living and working space are under way. Sean Kelsey, the resident studio engineer, is very excited by the prospect of creating a state-of-the-art recording and post-production facility in the heart of Londons Kings Cross district.
“Once the studio work is completed (hopefully by April 2010) we’ll be in a great position to start getting the studio filled with talent. I really don’t care if its music, voice over, podcasts, dialogue, corporate... In rebuilding the studio to a professional standard, we’ll be more attractive to a whole new spectrum of clients.”
Meld Architects, who are overseeing the design and construction of the new studios, are confident that the new look studios will definitely be a puller. While this is not their normal project, they are quite excited by the prospect of building their first studio.
